In Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, Goudarz, the son of Kashvad, is one of the famous heroes who appears for the first time in the story of the Mazandaran War. He plays roles by accompanying Iranian heroes in the battle against Turanians and non-Iranians. Following the death of many of his sons and grandsons in the beginning of the kingdom of Lohrasb, he leaves the story. Goudarz, who plays nearly seventy roles in the Shahnameh, is a powerful, considerate, wise and vengeful general, who can be deemed as one of the most prominent heroes of the Shahnameh next to Rostam. Goudarz's role in scrolls and oral narratives of the Shahnameh is much bigger and more important than his role in the text of the Shahnameh; he performs acts that have not been mentioned before in epic literature. Thus, the present study seeks to depict his life from birth to death. The study is conducted by examining a collection of scrolls and oral narratives of Shahnameh and showing the narratives and references about his life and deeds, which are unprecedented in Shahnameh and heroic literature.
